tonight memories roll through my mind like thunder

some to fast too even ponder

I try to catch one or two and hold on tight

but they seem to be hurrying to somewhere else tonight

so I let the stillness of the late hour embrace me,

the candles flicker as if they are dancing wild and free

all the zoo seems to be bedded down waiting for St Nicholas to appear

I listen and keep expecting to hear the bells of the reindeer

on this cold night that is so star bright and incredibly clear

I smile remembering my JJ and Kat when they would pretend to be fast asleep

on this night as they waited til they thought no one was looking, then up they ran to the window for a peek

I always wondered what they said to each other in that child’s secret language only they understood,

probably if they set out enough cookies or perhaps they discussed if they had been naughty or exceptionally good

so many memories I wander through tonight, some happy, some sad,

mostly just being grateful for all the blessings I know I have 

I remember friends who no longer are here or have no time

but I can’t seem to leave their memory behind

I think how nice it would be to hear the phone ring

knowing what fun it would be, knowing the smiles and laughter their voice would bring

yes my mind wanders, my heart aches for those moments that were taken away from me

on this night when angels sing and the creatures of the earth speak at the midnight hour

I’ll close my eyes and dream of you and dancing under sparkling star showers

time for bed, time for dreams

So to all who wander on this night in memories deep,

I wish you well and my your Christmas day be extraordinarily sweet

and may you all make memories to treasure

into the faraway nights of forever
